Possible causes
A faulty appliance, an overloaded circuit, moisture or a wiring fault can cause a protective device to trip. A circuit breaker usually responds to excessive current; an RCD responds to leakage current. Some devices combine both functions.
The timing can help an electrician investigate: note whether it happens when a particular appliance starts, during wet weather or when several appliances run together. Tripping is a warning to investigate, rather than a reason to keep resetting the switch.
What to do next
If there are no signs of danger and the controls are dry and accessible, unplug appliances on the affected circuit and try one reset using the normal front controls. Do not remove the consumer unit cover or touch wiring.
If the switch trips again, leave it off and arrange fault finding. Stop using an appliance that appears to cause a trip and have it checked. Do not continue if you notice burning smells, scorching, sparks, damaged equipment or water near electrical equipment. For fire or immediate danger, leave the property and call 999.
