Certain work must be notified to Building Control under Part P of the Building Regulations.
Notifiable work includes any new circuit, a consumer unit replacement, any new circuit in a bathroom or shower room, a supply to a garden or outbuilding, and a full or partial rewire.
Not notifiable includes adding a socket to an existing circuit outside a bathroom, replacing a light fitting or switch like for like, and repairs to existing circuits.
This matters because notifiable work done without notification has no legal paperwork behind it. When you sell or let the property, a solicitor will ask for the certificate. If there is not one, the usual fix is a regularisation application to the council, which costs several hundred pounds and involves an inspector opening up work that has long since been covered.
A registered electrician self certifies and notifies as part of the job at no extra cost, so there is no reason to end up in that position.
