In England, Part P of the Building Regulations applies to electrical work in homes. Some work must also be notified to Building Control.
The main notifiable jobs are installing a new circuit, replacing a consumer unit, and adding to or altering an existing circuit in a special location around a bath or shower. A new circuit to a garden building is notifiable because it is a new circuit. A rewire is not automatically notifiable just because it is called a rewire; the exact work determines whether notification is required.
Jobs such as replacing a fitting like for like or adding a socket to an existing circuit outside a special location are generally not notifiable, but they still need to be carried out safely and tested as appropriate.
There are several routes for notifiable work, including a registered electrician who can self-certify through a competent person scheme, a registered third-party certifier where available, or Building Control.
