Most homes need rewiring every twenty five to thirty years. These are the signs.
Rubber, fabric or lead sheathed cable anywhere in the property. Modern cable is grey or white PVC. Anything black and rubbery is well past its life and the insulation will be crumbling.
- Round pin or two pin sockets, which were phased out decades ago.
- An old rewireable fuse box with no RCD protection.
- Sockets or switches that feel warm to the touch.
- Lights dimming noticeably when an appliance kicks in.
- Frequent tripping across several different circuits, not just one.
- Not enough sockets, with extension leads running everywhere.
If you are unsure, get an EICR first. It costs a fraction of a rewire and tells you whether you need a full rewire, a partial one, or just a few repairs.
