Check registration and paperwork
Check the electrician’s qualifications, relevant experience and public liability insurance. If they say they are registered with NAPIT or another competent person scheme, check the scheme’s public register rather than relying on a logo alone.
Ask what inspection, testing and certification your job needs. Notifiable work in England also requires the appropriate Building Regulations notification. Agree who will provide the electrical certificate and any notification paperwork before the work starts.
A registration badge is useful evidence, but the electrician should also explain the proposed work clearly and answer questions about your particular property.
Ask for a clear written quote
A photo or phone call can help with an initial estimate. The written quote should identify the work included, materials, testing, certificates and any exclusions. Check whether VAT, waste removal, plaster repairs and decorating are included where relevant.
Agree how additional work will be priced and approved before it starts. Comparing the scope as well as the price makes quotations easier to assess.
