Check they are registered with a Competent Person Scheme.
NAPIT and NICEIC are the two main ones and both carry identical legal standing. Registration means they can certify and notify their own work. You can check any registration free on the scheme's own website.
Ask what certificate you will get at the end. The answer should be an Electrical Installation Certificate for new circuits, a Minor Works Certificate for alterations, or an EICR for an inspection. Anyone who is vague about this is a problem.
Ask for a written fixed price rather than an hourly rate on a job that can be priced. Hourly work has no ceiling.
Check they are insured, with public liability at a minimum.
Be wary of anyone asking for a large deposit before starting, anyone who cannot give you a registration number, and anyone who quotes over the phone for a job they have not seen.
